I chose a short piece titled Chalk a short film. More specifically, I believe the editing of this film has made a significant contribution to the storytelling and feeling. There is a relationship of sounds to the images. Further, there is a non-diagetic sound such as a metaphoric sound (piano) added to the background. There are no people to be seen inside the school, but outside the school adds a metaphor of love between the boy and chalk drawing of a woman (mother). The sound provides an idea of unconditional love to the viewers. However, the content of this film focus on a boy using a chalk to draw, express the importance of love and being loved. The shots were organized in terms of the content through point of view sequence. First, the boy is running, stops before entering an empty classroom surprised. Second, he is staring at the chalks held in his hand while leaving the room. Third, a school security reacts in disbelief while looking at the boy chalk drawing on the floor. There are smooth and quick transitions of certain shots in the film. Also each shots focus on the movement of the boy moving place to place with a chalk. The cuts are obvious because it match the action between shots of the boy drawing on the floor. There are cuts taken from a long shot to a medium close up. Consequently, a full shot is placed at the end focusing on the boy and drawing.

MOMI Reflections

During my visit at the Museum of Moving Images in Astoria, Queens, I found the exhibits and demonstrations relating to many aspects of media production. I learned about the Production Design role in media production. More specifically, the Production designers construct set of models, sketches to create a style or originality to make a film from their own perspective. The ideas of Production Design derive from the script of a film. Further, these ideas of images and models offer a dialogue between the characters in a scene that give viewers a better understanding of the content. Also these designs help communicate with the viewers, subject matter that provide a mood and evoke feelings. The designs in the film create a visual frame for the production. In addition, the designs correlate with the camera angles, lighting, special effect such as motion and sounds. The Production Design was an easier way to create a location in stage studios rather renting a location outside the studio. For this reason the cost are less expensive. However, the changes in moving technology changed the way moving images are created. For this reason they bring the stories to life through visual narratives. The images are used to create a style of modern and traditional through the sequence of storytelling. Furthermore, we experienced them through response and emotions because images can address and spread a message to connect with viewers. This helps us recognize how the platform of multimedia can be used as a purpose and creativity.

Blog#2

The topic I will discuss is soundwalk. R. Murray Shafer is a musician and professor who developed soundwalk. Soundwalk is the practice of walking where an individual focus on a sound sonically. More specifically, I will share my soundwalk experience around Central Park in New York City. I hear a texture of a compressed sound in which low, mid and high level sounds intact together. There are specific instruments in the city symphony. These include keynotes of a tuba sound of timbres, harmonic soundground of flute or whistle and sound signals of a sublime sound of sitar. During the afternoon, I discover clues of sounds within the area such as bird chirping, busy city, traffic and normal voice conversation between people. On the other hand a peaceful sound is meaningful to my well-being mentally and physically. For this reason it allows me to calm the mind and relieve stress or anxiety. In addition, improves my memory and concentration of inner, outer-self, life and world. As an extrovert I expect peaceful sounds because I sometimes feel comfortable, relaxing alone rather noisy sound of crowds or objects consume my energy and distract concentration. In contrast the unexpected is the repetitive patterns of sounds that represent the everyday scene of visiting or living in New York City. Therefore, a peaceful sound allows me to be free, recharge myself mentally and physically. Moreover, the soundwalk open my ears to the sound of natural environment and stomping ground of Central Park in New York City.

As an artist I believe that it's important for me to think about myself in various ways. Further as a creator, producer of ideas, images and getting the word out about my work through a media platform. Specifically, my personal motivation is to develop skills, evolve through past and present works. As a result, to develop a company that impacts a culture. I would like to work in film such as animation, video art and photographic film. However, I earned an Associate’s Degree in Fine Art. I attended a school for Advertising and Media, developing creative concepts such as commercial scripts, storyboards, slogan and logos. In addition many of my creative ideas derive from museum visits in New York, studies of art history such as Asian and contemporary. My curiosities lies on networking with media outlets expand audience through expressing wide range of important content relatable. On the other hand I'm interested in cartooning, photography showing value, symbols, images, languages can help people have power, speech, freedom of expression to communicate through all forms of culture. These include high culture, culture diversity, subculture, multiculturalism and global culture. There are many influential artists and filmmakers that I admire. These include Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Nam June Pack, Barbara Kruger, Nikki S. Lee, Maya Lin and others. Their works inspired me to use art through social awareness, identity, message and voice to connect with a generation. Overall, these motives, interest, curiosities will help showcase my potential and glimpse of media making behind the scene.
